In the wilds of the Northern California mountains, all the inhabitants of a small town have gone missing. It’s as if the people picked up and left everything they owned behind. Fearing something supernatural might be going on, the FBI taps a source they’ve consulted in the past: the werewolves Charles Cornick and Anna Latham. But Charles and Anna soon find a deserted town is the least of the mysteries they face.
Death sings in the forest, and when it calls, Charles and Anna must answer. Something has awakened in the heart of the California mountains, something old and dangerous ā and it has met werewolves before.

BOOK REVIEW
MY THOUGHTS
If you haven’t read anything by Patricia Briggs yet, but you love fantasy, with shapeshifters, witches, vampires, and gods. Lots of magic and folklore. You’ll love this world.
Patricia Briggs has two series she is currently writing. Both still ongoing. And both are part of the same world. But each series follows a different werwolf pack, and a main couple. Many of the characters overlap from one series to the other. But the Alpha & Omega series follows Anne and her mate Charles, who is their alpha’s assassin. He is Native American, and she is an Omega wolf.
From the very beginning I loved the connection between Anne and Charles. It’s deep, and it grows with each book. Also I love how their relationship changes and grows over time. And with their relationship, they change too. They are a power couple like Mercy and Adam in the author’s Mercy Thompson Series.
Now about all the things I loved about the book:
- loved the story, very atmospheric, and hard to put down
- lots of backstory and revelations on established characters
- Anne with her gentle, kind but strong personality impressed the hell out of me
- the chemistry between Anne and Charles was impossible to deny
The story was fascinating. I’m not kidding when I say that I couldn’t put the book down. The story itself, but also the backstories of the characters pulled me in. And I loved that I found out so much about already established characters like Leah, Anne’s mother in law, her backstory was eye opening.
Also I was not prepared for how this story effected me. I don’t know why, but this time the story itself was quite menacing and thrilling. And the atmosphere of it all gave me actual goosebumps. And now, days later I’m still thinking about it. Proof that the author does storytelling incredibly well. Also I have this visual image of the bad guy (thanks to google) that I can’t forget. Shiver!!!
It’s also an example why the author’s books are always on the very top of my tbr. I pretty much drop everything to read them, and I’m never disappointed.
So, if you are in the market for a new fantasy series – give this one a try. I’m 100% sure you won’t regret it.
