Virgin River: 10 Books to Read After Watching the Show
I came across this series in January of 2011 – almost 10 years ago, and I bought the first 15 books in the first two month of 2011. Not surprisingly I was hooked! I LOVED how beautiful the author depicted small town life in Northern California. And I remember that her books always covered a topic that was close to her heart, something that gave the novels emotional depth.
The point is that these novels were something special to me. I adored the characters and loved immersing myself in Virgin River, California for two month straight. That’s dedication, but also says a lot about how much I enjoyed her books.
So, when I found out that Netflix was turning the series into a show I might have been hesitant at first, but I was also looking forward to checking it out. Color me surprised when I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome.
So, if you are like me and enjoyed the show and would like to read the books, or a similar series set in a small town in the US, I got you covered.
Below are series and books that offer a similar feel to Virgin River.

Virgin River by Robyn Carr

Welcome back to Virgin River with the book that started it all…
Wanted: Midwife/nurse practitioner in Virgin River, population six hundred. Make a difference against a backdrop of towering California redwoods and crystal clear rivers. Rent-free cabin included.
When the recently widowed Melinda Monroe sees this ad, she quickly decides that the remote mountain town of Virgin River might be the perfect place to escape her heartache, and to reenergize the nursing career she loves. But her high hopes are dashed within an hour of arriving—the cabin is a dump, the roads are treacherous and the local doctor wants nothing to do with her. Realizing she’s made a huge mistake, Mel decides to leave town the following morning.
But a tiny baby abandoned on a front porch changes her plans…and former marine Jack Sheridan cements them into place.
SERIES RECOMMENDATIONS
When Lightning Strikes by Brenda Novak
I fell in love with Brenda Novak’s writing thanks to this series, but especially because of When Snow Falls the second book in this series. This series is all about finding love in a small town, with a wonderful group of best friends who have each other’s backs.

Simon O’Neal’s causing trouble again. And it’s up to Gail DeMarco to stop him.
Gail DeMarco left Whiskey Creek, California, to make a name for herself in Los Angeles. Her PR firm has accumulated a roster of A-list clients, including the biggest box office hit of all—sexy and unpredictable Simon O’Neal. But Simon, who’s just been through a turbulent divorce, is so busy self-destructing he won’t listen to anything she says. She drops him from her list—and he retaliates by taking the rest of her clients with him.
Desperate to save her company, Gail has to humble herself by making a deal with Simon. The one thing he wants is custody of his son, but that’s going to require a whole new image. He needs to marry some squeaky-clean girl who’ll drag him off to some small, obscure place like Whiskey Creek….
Gail’s the only one he can trust. She agrees to become his wife—reluctantly. But she isn’t reluctant because he’s too hard to like. It’s because he’s too hard not to love!
Simply Irresistible by Jill Shalvis

Jill Shalvis writes wonderful sweet romances, in a little town that will charm your socks off. Sweet and light hearted, with solid writing and wonderfully endearing characters.
Maddie Moore’s whole life needs a makeover.
In one fell swoop, Maddie loses her boyfriend (her decision) and her job (so not her decision). But rather than drowning her sorrows in bags of potato chips, Maddie leaves L.A. to claim the inheritance left by her free-spirited mother—a ramshackle inn nestled in the little coastal town of Lucky Harbor, Washington.
Starting over won’t be easy. Yet Maddie sees the potential for a new home and a new career—if only she can convince her two half-sisters to join her in the adventure. But convincing Tara and Chloe will be difficult because the inn needs a big makeover too.
The contractor Maddie hires is a tall, dark-haired hottie whose eyes—and mouth—are making it hard for her to remember that she’s sworn off men. Even harder will be Maddie’s struggles to overcome the past, though she’s about to discover that there’s no better place to call home than Lucky Harbor.
Whiskey Chaser by Lucy Score, Claire Kingsley
This series is a crowd pleaser, with solid writing and wonderful endearing characters. Hilarious small town community with a big heart. I wish a town like Bootleg Springs would exist.

Raised by her three overbearing brothers, Scarlett is a hell-raising tomboy with a tool belt. A tornado stirring up trouble everywhere she goes. Her favorite pastimes? Drinking any man under the table and two-stepping. But she has zero interest in love. Scarlett’s only being neighborly when she claims her sexy next-door neighbor as her new pet project.
Devlin is a man at rock bottom. Marriage, political career, five-year plan to Washington, D.C. All destroyed with one well-placed jab. The golden boy is now the black sheep relegated to Bootleg Springs, a tiny West Virginia town with two claims to fame: 1. Moonshine and 2. The cold case disappearance of a teen girl.
Devlin just wants to lick his wounds. But Scarlett has other ideas for his tongue… and the rest of him. She’s determined to bring him back to life, even if getting him back on his feet means never seeing him again. But when an old mystery becomes new news, she’ll need his help to survive the scandal.
Bittersweet by Sarina Bowen
This is one of my favorite small town series, it has so much to offer, and especially the first book with grumpy farmer Griffin checked all the boxes. Sweet, charming and swoon worthy.

If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the orchard.
The last person Griffin Shipley expects to find stuck in a ditch on his Vermont country road is his ex-hookup. Five years ago they’d shared a couple of steamy nights together. But that was a lifetime ago.
At twenty-seven, Griff is now the accidental patriarch of his family farm. Even his enormous shoulders feel the strain of supporting his mother, three siblings and a dotty grandfather. He doesn’t have time for the sorority girl who’s shown up expecting to buy his harvest at half price.
Vermont was never in Audrey Kidder’s travel plans. Neither was Griff Shipley. But she needs a second chance with the restaurant conglomerate employing her. Okay—a fifth chance. And no self-righteous lumbersexual farmer will stand in her way.
They’re adversaries. They want entirely different things from life. Too bad their sexual chemistry is as hot as Audrey’s top secret enchilada sauce, and then some.
Ain’t He Precious? by Sawyer Bennett
I laughed so much reading this book. The Southern charm, and witty dialogues were a wonderful combination one that I highly recommend. Fun, light, and quirky.

Welcome to Whynot, North Carolina, population 3,872. It has one stoplight, one bar, and the one-and-only Trixie Mancinkus.
Eleven years ago, Trixie graduated Harvard Law, turned down a job offer from one of the most prestigious law firms in Boston, and headed home to Whynot to open her own firm. Not only did she leave behind the big city, but she also left her boyfriend of three years. And just so we’re clear… that would be me.
So what am I doing in Whynot at this very moment? It seems Trixie needs help with a legal case and for some insane reason, she called on me for assistance. I’ve been in town for five minutes, and I’m every bit as out of place as I feel. Trixie is all sweet, southern curves to my tailored suits and high-priced haircuts. It’s a culture clash of north versus south and about the only thing we have in common is our physical attraction to each other.
But I have a new motto since coming to Whynot: When life hands you lemons, all you need is a little sex and sweet tea to make things better.
Truth or Beard by Penny Reid
I read this book because of one character – CLETUS – but all the other Winston brothers are not to be missed. This series is the epitome of small town life, sweet, funny and entertaining.

Beards, brothers, and bikers! Oh my!
Identical twins Beau and Duane Winston might share the same devastatingly handsome face, but where Beau is outgoing and sociable, Duane is broody and reserved. This is why Jessica James, recent college graduate and perpetual level-headed good girl, has been in naïve and unhealthy infatuation with Beau Winston for most of her life.
His friendly smiles make her tongue-tied and weak-kneed, and she’s never been able to move beyond her childhood crush. Whereas Duane and Jessica have always been adversaries. She can’t stand him, and she’s pretty sure he can’t stand the sight of her…
But after a case of mistaken identity, Jessica finds herself in a massive confusion kerfuffle. Jessica James has spent her whole life paralyzed by the fantasy of Beau and her assumptions of Duane’s disdain; therefore she’s unprepared for the reality that is Duane’s insatiable interest, as well as his hot hands and hot mouth and hotter looks. Not helping Jessica’s muddled mind and good girl sensibilities, Duane seems to have gotten himself in trouble with the local biker gang, the Iron Order.
Certainly, Beau’s magic spell is broken. Yet when Jessica finds herself drawn to the man who was always her adversary, now more dangerous than ever, how much of her level-head heart is she willing to risk?
Virgin River: Books to Read After Watching the Show
I love this post so much! I can’t wait to dive into the second season of Virgin River over Thanksgiving weekend!
Me too, and the new Bridgestone show over Christmas.
Ooo, I’ll have to check that one out!
It’s based on a historical romance series by Julia Quinn
I loved this series when I read it years ago. I’m glad they made it a series. I need to watch it!
You do!!! There will be a season two over Thanksgiving – perfect reason to stay indoors, be lazy and binge watch on your sofa 😂
Is the second season going to played all at once? I loved the first one. Several of these books sound wonderful. I have looked at the Winston Brothers series several times, maybe I should just go ahead and start. Wonderful post Corinna.
Thank you, and yes I believe they stream it all on one day. I’m looking forward to getting back to it. And check if your library has one of the Winston brothers, or get a sample to see how you like her writing 😁
They are all available on Hoopla through my library.
Awesome! Give them a try, but just saying if you skip straight to Beard Science you wouldn’t hurt my feelings 😂 you should definitely give CLETUS a chance.
