I finally picked up my first book by Camille Pagán, even though I’ve seen her books on GR many times before. And I’m actually really glad I did, since This Wont End Well turned out to be entertaining, well written and engaging.

SYNOPSIS:
No new people: that’s Annie Mercer’s vow. It’s bad enough that her boss sabotaged her chemistry career and her best friend tried to cure her with crystals. But after her fiancé, Jon, asks for space while he’s gallivanting around Paris, Annie decides she needs space too – form everyone.
Yet when Harper moves in next door, Annie can’t help but train a watchful eye on the glamorous but fragile woman. And if keeping Harper safer requires teaming up with Mo, a maddeningly optimistic amateur detective, who is she to mind her own business?
Soon, Annie has let no one but two new people into her life. Then Jon reappears – and he wants her to join him in France. She’s pretty sure letting “anyone” get close won’t end well. So she must decide: Is another shot at happiness worth the risk?

MY THOUGHTS
What I enjoyed the most about This Wont End Well by Camille Pagán was the feel good story about Annie finding herself. The novel was written in journal entries, in which Annie chronicles her life, primarily from the point when her fiancée leaves for Paris without her. Suddenly she is forced to reevaluate her life, relationship, and future.
Annie was, in many ways, a very relatable character. A realist, dry humored, and a bit of a loner. A scientist by heart, honest, blunt and strong willed. I enjoyed seeing her stepping outside her comfort zone. First by befriending her neighbor Harper and Mo, a possible stalker, but also by opening up to new opportunities, taking chances on something different and unknown. The gradual change was slow but palpable, and something she needed to do for herself. I actually loved her character the most when she interacted with these new friends. Because when Annie opened up, she allowed herself to reach for something more than just the status quo.
Overall, the writing was sharp and engaging and the characters approachable and genuine. I can see myself picking up another of the author’s novels, since the uplifting story was an easy and light-hearted read.
