THE SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO BY TAYLOR JENKINS REID
I’m just coming out and say it here and now – this book deserves ALL the stars. Not only because of Evelyn Hugo herself, but also because of the story, the overall plot, and all the emotions it evoked in me. It’s with one word a MASTERPIECE!!!

Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?
Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband has left her, and her professional life is going nowhere. Regardless of why Evelyn has selected her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.
Summoned to Evelyn’s luxurious apartment, Monique listens in fascination as the actress tells her story. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the ’80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way, Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love. Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the legendary star, but as Evelyn’s story near its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways.

MY THOUGHTS
I don’t think it’s necessary for me to talk about the inner workings of this book. Just let me tell you, that Evelyn Hugo is one of the most intriguing and fascinating characters I’ve read this year.
Strong, ruthless, beautiful, and loving. She deserved an Oscar for her performance.
Her life was incredibly fascinating. And each husband brought her closer to her ultimate goal.
I honestly didn’t know what the book was about when I picked it up. I had no idea where it was going. But the uniquely different portrait of a Hollywood bombshell made Evelyn Hugo so unforgettable.
It was emotional, and heart-breaking at times. But also touching, moving, and never less than fantastic.
In the end the book kept me engaged, my heart was breaking for Evelyn, but most of all I was amazed by the entire story, and just blown away by it all.
After reading two books by TJR, which both ended up being 5 star reads for me, I know that I’ll be reading everything this author is releasing from here on out. I’m hooked. Two amazing books in one year by the same author is all the proof I need.
BRAVO!!!
Also, if you haven’t read DAISY JONES & THE SIX yet, you should pick up the audiobook, it’s one of the BEST performances EVER!!!

I’m hoping to read this book when I can. 🙂
I highly recommend the audiobook. And it’s never too late to pick up a book. Whenever it feels like the right time.:D
Great review! It seems like I’m the only one that did not read this book yet. I’m very curious about it. It sounds like a great read. 😉
It’s a FANTASTIC read, and I’m sure you’ll pick it up when the right time has come 😀
I definitely need to reread this one! Evelyn is such an unforgettable character. Great review! ?☺️
Thank you ?
It’s definitely a book I’ll never forget.
Great review. Glad to hear you enjoyed this one. I have been tempted to try it out and your review convinced me I need to pick it up and soon.
The story was so gripping, sad too, but also so unique and unforgettable. But I can see how it isn’t for everyone either, because it’s definitely not a romance, although it’s a love story, but it’s more like a fictional old school Hollywood memoir.
Did you read this one or listened as audiobook? I listened to it last month and didn’t like it as much as I thought I would, but I was also feeling slumpish at the time, and I feel like I would have gotten more into the story and connected more to the characters if I read it instead of listening.
I’d love to try other books by TJR anyway.
I listened to it – BUT it took me two tries to get into the book. I DNFed it in 2018, but after loving Daisy Jones, I picked it up again and although I still struggled through the very beginning until the interview and story of Evelyn really started, at that point I was HOOKED!! The beginning was definitely the slow part for me.
Loved this book!
I’m so excited about her next book 😀
