Molly Gray is not like everyone else. She struggles with social skills and misreads the intentions of others. Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by.
Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-year-old Molly has been navigating life’s complexities all by herself. No matter—she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job. She delights in donning her crisp uniform each morning, stocking her cart with miniature soaps and bottles, and returning guest rooms at the Regency Grand Hotel to a state of perfection.
But Molly’s orderly life is upended the day she enters the suite of the infamous and wealthy Charles Black, only to find it in a state of disarray and Mr. Black himself dead in his bed. Before she knows what’s happening, Molly’s unusual demeanor has the police targeting her as their lead suspect. She quickly finds herself caught in a web of deception, one she has no idea how to untangle. Fortunately for Molly, friends she never knew she had unite with her in a search for clues to what really happened to Mr. Black—but will they be able to find the real killer before it’s too late?
A Clue-like, locked-room mystery and a heartwarming journey of the spirit, The Maid explores what it means to be the same as everyone else and yet entirely different—and reveals that all mysteries can be solved through connection to the human heart.

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW
I received a copy of this book from the publisher for free in exchange for an honest review. My opinions have not been influenced by the publisher or the author.
Sometimes hype is the worst that can happen to a book.
When I picked up THE MAID for the first time I expected something extraordinary thanks to the many amazing reviews I’ve seen so far. Instead I found it to be entertaining, a solid debut novel, but not overly outstanding, with a bit of a misleading synopsis.
Overall I thought THE MAID was quite the entertaining book. It’s a well written debut novel, with a somewhat fresh take on a mystery novel that features a quirky character.
Molly is a maid at a fancy hotel and her direct approach to life and daily situations was entertaining, but not always consistent. Don’t take me wrong, I loved Molly’s bluntness. She also struggled recognising social niceties and cues, which made for some awkward but also entertaining conversations. For a fictional character she had everything to make her an outstanding and memorabel heroine – and she was in a sense. It’s hard to explain, but there was a feeling of wrongness too. As if the author tried too hard, and missed the point at times.
Overall I liked Molly a lot but didn’t find her character as unique or groundbreaking as some reviews make her out to be.
Now the way the story was told fit the overall feel of the book. The mystery moved along nicely, and Molly gave the story a certain charm and uniqueness. I just find it could have been done even better. In the end the books was entertaining and a solid debut novel.
I’m certainly looking forward to the author’s next book.

The Maid by Nita Prose | AUDIOBOOK REVIEW
What a great review you have here. I really appreciate the honesty on this one here. I really don’t understand it when the blurb doesn’t really convey the aspect of the story line very well.
Thank you, and it always makes me wonder what the publishing firms were thinking when deciding on blurbs that don’t actually convey the truth about a book.
I read and enjoyed this book, Corina, but also had some problems with it. I liked Molly as a character, but she acts out of character at the end and knowing many people on the autism spectrum (although it is not stated she is) they would not act that far out of character. Wonderful review.
That’s one of the issues I had too. She didn’t sound authentic at times, at least compared to the way she was portrayed and described. And I sometimes worry that more and more authors use ‘quirky’ character, maybe even on the spectrum, as a means to get talked about and on the bestseller list. And the authentic feel gets lost.
All good points.
