POPSUGAR READING CHALLENGE – AN AFROFUTURIST BOOK

Nebula, Locus, and Alex Award-winner P. Djèlí Clark returns with Ring Shout, a dark fantasy historical novella that gives a supernatural twist to the Ku Klux Klan’s reign of terror.
D. W. Griffith is a sorcerer, and The Birth of a Nation is a spell that drew upon the darkest thoughts and wishes from the heart of America. Now, rising in power and prominence, the Klan has a plot to unleash Hell on Earth.
Luckily, Maryse Boudreaux has a magic sword and a head full of tales. When she’s not running bootleg whiskey through Prohibition Georgia, she’s fighting monsters she calls “Ku Kluxes.” She’s damn good at it, too. But to confront this ongoing evil, she must journey between worlds to face nightmares made flesh–and her own demons. Together with a foul-mouthed sharpshooter and a Harlem Hellfighter, Maryse sets out to save a world from the hate that would consume it.

BOOK REVIEW
MY THOUGHTS
This was such a unique story.
First I must say the audiobook was very well done. The narrator sang, chanted, and cackled, but her belly laughs were my favorite. Her passion for her work was palpable.
Now about the book.
I would be lying if I said that I didn’t struggle with it at the beginning. The plot was original to the T, but also confusing at times.
Also the novel is definitely part of the horror genre which I DO NOT usually read. But I made an exception, because of the cover and sine it fit perfectly one of my Popsugar Reading Challenge categories – An Afrofuturist book.
Overall I was impressed by the originality of the plot, and the author’s way of making it all work. The way reality and fantasy came together was very skillfully done. Also who wouldn’t cheer on a strong heroine, with a magical sword, and the skill to kill monsters.
And those monsters were SCARY!
With barely 200 pages and 5 Std. und 36 Min the book was a fast read, but never felt like a novella, thanks to an action packed plot, and a great back story.

Ring Shout by P Djèlí Clark | AUDIO REVIEW
This is one I’m definitely excited to pick up, even though horror isn’t a genre I typically read much of. I’ve heard incredible things about P. Djèlí Clark’s writing!
It was my first book by the author, but I can see where the amazing reviews are coming from. It’s hard to find stories that are as original as Ring Shout. Will have to check out his other books too.
You lost me at horror on this one. I try to avoid it if possible, but it sounds like an interesting read!
I must admit I didn’t know it was horror, I picked it up because of the cover and the awesome ratings – lol. Should have looked a bit closer.
Not my genre, but wonderful review. Who was the narrator?
Channie Waites, I’ve not heard her before but her narration was TOP!!!!
Thanks Corinna. I will put her on my list.
