Let’s Talk Indie/Used Bookstores

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer’s permission, Billy @ Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer relaunched the hop on February 15, 2013. Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end the following Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to their own blog.
Today I’m participating in my first Book Blogger Hop!
This week’s prompt: Do you visit indie and/or used bookstores? Also, have you ever worked in any?
Let’s Talk Indie/Used Bookstores
Let’s talk about indie bookstores first.
I don’t go very often.
And that’s a real shame, which leads me to my pledge – I NEED TO DO BETTER.
As so many other things I’m pledging to do differently going forward, supporting independent bookstores is on the very top.
- First thing I’ll be doing after the move is find independent bookstores in my new neighborhood, and visit at least once a month, and buy at least ONE book per visit.
- I also want to visit an independent bookstore every time I travel. I want to make memories by researching bookstores, visiting them, supporting them by buying something, and turning that something into a souvenir/memory. Maybe I’ll even turn my travel bookstore visits into a blog post series.
- I also want to find out if some of these independent bookstores have bookclubs, book meets etc. I would love to connect with readers in my community.
Let’s Talk Indie/Used Bookstores
Now how about used bookstores?
I must admit I rarely buy used books. And I couldn’t even tell you why I steer towards new vs used books. Although I just recently bought a couple used copies of hardcover editions that are not available anymore. And I couldn’t have completed my collection any other way.
I’m also rethinking my love for new books, being someone who will eventually need to start her book collection/private library from scratch, I think I will look into used books. Books can be quite expensive, and if I want to be able to fill all my new bookshelves in a timely manner, I will have to look into a cheaper options. That’s when used bookstores come handy.
Let’s Talk Indie/Used Bookstores
And last question, have I ever worked in a bookstore?
Sadly no! BUT owning my own bookstore/cafe has always been a dream of mine. We’ll see if it ever happens.
Let’s Talk Indie/Used Bookstores
I don’t buy secondhand books very often. When I do, it takes longer for them to become ‘mine’.
That’s such an interesting point but it makes sense! But I can see how they don’t feel like yours yet, compared to new books.
We don’t really have indie book stores around our area – but I love going to the second hand ones. Always so many treasures to find.
I’m always amazed by the treasures some find at their used bookstores, or even thrift stores. I have not been lucky yet myself, but there are some amazing books to be found.
I actually found a hard cover boxed set of the Twilight Saga once…
That’s a really nice find!!!!!!!
I would love to own a bookstore! Definitely sounds like a dream, doesn’t it?! While I do try to support my indie bookstores, it has been harder to do these days.
I agree!! I haven’t bought a physical book in ages and I can’t wait to be able to buy again. It’s such a great feeling to browse books and see my bookshelf filling up. ?
