How I spectacularly failed my Netgalley Readathon
So, last week I decided to participate in a weeklong NetGalley Readathon hosted by The Library Looter & Anniek’s Library. I was in need of some NetGalley reading and thought the Readathon came at a perfect time. Unfortunately I failed spectacularly.
As a mood reader, I’m a slave to my frame of mind, and instead of reading the books I had set aside for this week, I absolutely and TOTALLY went off the rails.
Here are the original books I had set aside for this week:
A Bad Day for Sunshine by Darynda Jones
Dragon Unleashed by Grace Draven
If I Never Met You by Mhairi McFarlane
Starbreaker by Amanda Bouchet

And here is what I actually read:
A Bad Day for Sunshine by Darynda Jones ✔️ READ
This is the ONLY book I read and finished from my original list.
The Love Story of Missy Carmichael by Beth Morrey
I actually got a physical ARC of this book, and at least by reading it, I was able to check it off my ARC to-do list. ✔️
The Brutal Telling (Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, #5) by Louise Penny
I’m slowly making my way through this series. Although I only started at the beginning of the year, I’m tentatively planning to have all 15 books read by September when the 16th books is being released. Or at least by the end of the year. 2020 is going to be the year of THREE PINES!!
Wild at Heart (Wild, #2) by K.A. Tucker
This is the most embarrassing moment of all, when I confess that I preferred to RE-READ this book instead of reading what I was supposed to read. Like I said – OFF THE RAILS!!!
Masked Prey (A Prey Novel Book 30) by John Sandford
And then, to top if off, I just couldn’t control myself and had to listen to the newly released audiobook of a series that is hugely comforting to me. It’s like visiting old friends, comforting police procedure, and I just love the narrators voice.
This was purely case of a library audiobook expiring on me, and I didn’t want to have to renew it again. Lazy me!! BUT it was such a GREAT audiobook that I’m not even going to feel bad about it – lol.

What I’ve learned from all of this:
So, although it’s sad that I didn’t manage to check off a couple more books from my NetGalley shelf, I’m also not surprised. In all honesty, I wasn’t looking forward to any of the books I picked for this challenge. Sometimes reading ARCs is more like a chore, especially at the moment. This pandemic has made reading ARCs so difficult for me. That’s also a reason why I’m not giving up yet, but overall it’s not a good sign.
On the other hand I love a good readathon, and will participate in more throughout the year. I’m ok with whatever the result will be, because I really enjoy the participation and picking books.
I just need to remember that I’m one major MOOD READER!!!
How do you do with reading challenges and readathons? Are they easy for you?
How I spectacularly failed my Netgalley Readathon
I totally get what you mean about reading ARCs sometimes feeling like a chore. There’s really nothing worse than having books that you NEED to read when you’re just not in the mood to read them
Right? That’s when being a mood reader is the WORSE!!
That is the problem with book challenges of ANY kind because most of the time we are mood readers so doing a list rarely works lol Its why most of the time I just do the Goodreads challenge, because I never accomplish them . At least you got one of the books you planned on read though.
Right? I was happy about the one NetGalley book plus the one ARC book – lol. Small steps and all. But I totally agree, being a mood reader is definitely not helpful, but on the other side doing more readathons, could mean that I get at least one book done each time. 😀
LOL at re-reading Wild at Heart! I think we’ve all been mood readers this month!!
I’m horrible at this – lol! I rather re-read favorite books than grab one on my ARC shelf.
Although you failed the challenge, it’s awesome that you read so many other books!
what a fail ? but yes, if I don’t read the books I’m supposed to read, I usually read something else instead.
