If there’s one thing seventeen-year-old Maverick Carter knows, it’s that a real man takes care of his family. As the son of a former gang legend, Mav does that the only way he knows how: dealing for the King Lords. With this money he can help his mom, who works two jobs while his dad’s in prison.
Life’s not perfect, but with a fly girlfriend and a cousin who always has his back, Mav’s got everything under control.
Until, that is, Maverick finds out he’s a father.
Suddenly he has a baby, Seven, who depends on him for everything. But it’s not so easy to sling dope, finish school, and raise a child. So when he’s offered the chance to go straight, he takes it. In a world where he’s expected to amount to nothing, maybe Mav can prove he’s different.
When King Lord blood runs through your veins, though, you can’t just walk away. Loyalty, revenge, and responsibility threaten to tear Mav apart, especially after the brutal murder of a loved one. He’ll have to figure out for himself what it really means to be a man.

Ever since I read THUG a couple years ago, and On The Come Up in 2019 I have loved Angie Thomas’s writing. She brilliantly depicts the life, and the raw and emotional turmoil of young Black men in America.
And getting a prequel to THUG was just the icing on the cake.
Angie Thomas has this amazing talent of telling stories about characters that feel so incredibly real. And her books are raw and full of emotions. But most of all I love her writing. She just gets to the heart of it all. And her stories pull me in like no other.
Prequels are one of the hardest books to write. But I’ve not once had doubts about Maverick’s story. I was actually excited to read about Starr’s father. And I really wanted to read more about Garden Heights, and how it all began. And as expected, the author delivered.
Maverick’s story was inspiring. His struggles and what he had to go through broke my heart, but the way he moved on, to do better, and to provide for his family was uplifting and moving. I loved getting to know him more.
So far, I listened to all of her books and it’s one of the best decision I’ve done so far. Her audiobooks are AMAZING!!! Some of the best I listened to over the years. Heartfelt, with emotions just jumping of the pages, or in this case into my ears, and I often don’t want to put my phone down.
I’m continuing to read, listen and educate myself, and author’s like Angie Thomas make it easy.

I knew it would be good, but you made it sound even better than I was expecting! Prequels can be the hardest, you’re right. I think I’m going to have to save this one until I’m emotionally ready, though. Her writing always hits right in the heart. Great review!
You’ll love it. As always her stories are raw, and in your face real. It wasn’t as emotionally as THUG. THUG gave me goosebumps, and I always expected the worst, this one not so much, although she doesn’t pull any punches.
