A Madness of Sunshine by Nalini Singh
I don’t often read thrillers, more romantic suspense than thrillers, but when I found out Nalini Singh was writing one, I just had to read it. There were quite a few things I loved about this book.

Anahera Rawiri left New Zealand at twenty-one, fleeing small-town poverty and the ghosts of her childhood with no plans to look back. But eight years later, she returns, seeking familiarity as respite from the shattered remains of her new life. And despite the changes brought on by a bump in tourism–the shiny new welcome sign at the town line and a decidedly less shiny new police presence–Golden Cove appears much as it ever was: a small settlement on the savage West Coast of the South Island, populated by all the remembered faces and set against a backdrop of lush greenery, jagged cliffs, and crashing waves.
Detective Will Gallagher knows all about ghosts; his own chased him out of a promising career in Christchurch, landing him as the sole cop in a quaint town where his most pressing concerns are petty theft and the occasional drunk. When Golden Cove resident Miri Hinewai goes out for a run and fails to return, Will finds himself heading up a missing person’s search that rapidly escalates into an official investigation after this case is connected with similar ones from the past. As an outsider, Will begins to rely on Anahera’s knowledge of the area and its residents to help him delve into Golden Cove’s secrets, and to determine whether it shelters something far more dangerous than just an unforgiving landscape.

My thoughts
I’m getting more and more into thrillers and want to add even more to my 2020 tbr, so when I found out Nalini Singh was writing one, I got really excited about it.
There were quite a few things I loved about this book.
1) The story was set in New Zealand, and the author’s familiarity with this country was obvious and also the part that grabbed me the most. The language, the traditions, the small communities and the difficulties that come with them. Beautifully described in detail, it came to live on paper, and had me wishing I could travel to New Zealand right this minute.
2) Both main characters were mysterious, layered, and intriguing in their own way. Touching but also captivating, those layers were peeled, one after another. The entire process felt utterly natural and added to the mystery. And yes there is a couple – slow burn alert!!
3) The last quarter of the book was a nail biter – wowzer!! And I loved how it all came together.
What I struggled with was the pace of the story. It was slow going. It felt like the first 3/4 of the book was very much character driven, less action, more talking. There were so many suspects. So many opportunities. So many directions the story could go.
Overall I needed something more to be glued to the pages.
I’m a bit embarrassed to admit it, but it actually took me almost an entire week to finish this book.
On the other hand, I really liked how it all came together. And I’ll definitely be reading more of her thrillers if the author decides to write more. Thrillers is one genre I want to read more of, and having a favorite author writing this genre, just makes it easier on me.

I didn’t even know Nalini Singh wrote thrillers. It no fun when you have to stop and start reading.
It’s a brand-new development. But I believe she is currently writing on her second one. Which sounds like that this is a genre she likes to explore additional to all the other series she writes. I loved the authenticity of New Zealand live that she brings to the plot.
I’ve still never read NS. Have you got a good book to start with?
It depends on what you like to read. My personal favorite series is her Guild Hunter; archangels, vampires, baddies, kick-ass heroine – fantastic UF. The series is mostly about one couple and their supportive cast. Her most popular series is about Psy/Changeling, paranormal romance, every book about a different couple, different kind of shifters. I definitely have my favorite couples/books, but it’s a long series that needs commitment. Her contemporary romance books are my least favorites, I should say that they are less binge worthy, less captivating, but I have a favorite one, Rock Hard, that I adore.
That guild hunters sounds up my street and a bit Kate Daniels which I adore. Thank you – Micky ❤️
OMG, if you love Kate Daniels, but just saying nothing can compete with Kate and Curran, you’ll love Raphael and Elena 😀
Okay I’m adding it ? and yeah there’s only one Kate and Curran!
Hollis heard mention of KD and came running, hahaha. it’s definitely on my list!
I read this earlier this year but unfortunately it didn’t work for me. https://mistysbookspace.wordpress.com/2020/01/16/a-madness-of-sunshine-by-nalini-singh-romanceopoly/ here’s my review in case you’re interested in reading it. Great review!! I’m glad it worked for you.
What a great review you have here. Its a shame the pace was so slow going, I might get this in audio then. I am curious to see how she handles the thriller mystery aspects here. And it makes me so happy she was true to the culture of New Zealand (as I have family relations there I am really intrigued)
I can’t wait for you to read it. Let me know how she did. I imagine her being from New Zealand, she must have put her own experiences into the locale and the atmosphere and the people, it sounded incredibly authentic. And I bet the audiobook would be great, I love listening to mysteries and thrillers.
I’m still excited to read this, and I think it’s better knowing it’s a bit slower going in so I can prepare for that. Also I had to laugh when I read your confession about it taking nearly a week to get through. For most people, that would be really good! Funny how things skew in a community of avid readers ?
lol – her books are usually one-sitting kind of books, taking me a week was so strange. I would definitely recommend it, just because of the grittiness and the location. She does a great job.
Great review you have here darling. I have been very curious and it saddens me to hear the pacing is so slow…normally you would think considering the genre it would be the opposite. I probably will plan on trying it in audio then.
I feel like she went deliberately with a slower pace. It gave it a different, darker, more atmospheric tone that way. It’s just such a change compared to her other books. I wonder how it would have done if she would have written the book under a pen name.
